Loved this, Ruth, right down to the Mayflower T-shirt and French protestors (they even got the ridiculous length of that damn red tie right!). Next time I’m in LA, please take me to that soda counter!!
Frightening times we are living in. Thanks for the origin story of the word "soda jerk", I never even thought about it. I fondly remember penny candy. All your insights and information are appreciated. Good luck with your family research!
I actually never thought about the origin of the word soda jerk either. Now I’m wondering about how “jerk” got its meaning. Always a new rabbit hole, especially when it comes to language, right? Thanks for your comment, Vicki!
Thanks, you guys, and thanks again, Jolene for your kind words. I vote for chocolate chip cookie diplomacy! It’s something we all can agree on—or at least I would hope so!🍪🍪🍪
Thank you, Ruth! It's always a pleasure to read your posts.
Looking forward to reading about your parents.
I'm proud of our city for people's participation in No Kings Day. I'm so sorry about the situation of people with brown skin. We especially feel for them since Yakir has brown skin.
Wow, I haven't had a milk shake in years, and after reading your post I'm really craving one! Guess I've have to make one when I have room for ice cream in my always full freezer!
Thanks, Faye! And oy, keep Yakir safe. The whole situation is so very scary. I hope to share more family stories soon. It’s like I’m digging into our past to get a handle on the future, but I’m not sure that ever really works.
Anyway, those milkshakes have all been delicious! I think I need to try making some of the stunning but healthy recipes you keep posting about that are made with Melissa’s produce—there’s too much fat, sugar & carbs in my diet these days!😘
Thank you for sharing what's really going on on your side of the state. Did you eat some of those cookies! Let's not underestimate the power of a homemade chocolate chip cookie. :)
Sending you strength and hugs (if you're a hugger).
I am a hugger and really needed that one! Thanks, Julie. I appreciate your words—and you’re so right about the power of a chocolate chip cookie—and a hug too! At the next protest, I’m going to bring a large batch of cookies to hand out—and maybe some hugs too.🤗🍪😘
Hi Ruth! I'm so happy to get your message and sending extra hugs your way. I love your idea of handing out cookies and hugs. You're amazing and your kindness matters.
Hi Ruth - Good article! Just the mention of milkshakes stimulated my cravings, and memories of shakes past......Denis
Thanks, dear brother! Let’s go for a shake soon!😘

It’s a deal, Amie! Please come back! I’ll even treat you to a chocolate malted and a lime rickey! That drugstore is a total kick!
Thanks, Leslie! We have to keep laughing, hoping and eating chocolate malts! It gives us the energy to keep marchin’ on!

Thanks, Jolene! Yes, let’s hear it for chocolate chip cookies—a great mood lifter!🍪 Thanks for restocking my note too!😘

As always, beautifully written and reported, Ruth. Strange days, indeed. Here’s to chocolate chip cookies. ❤️
Hear, hear, Jolene!
