Good for you, Ruth! How wonderful that you helped to canvass for Harris in Nevada. (I understand about it being completely out of your comfort zone to do so, because I would feel the same.) This election is the most important one in our whole lives, and it is critical that we get it right. Thank you for helping to ensure that we do.
Oh, thanks so much, Clarice. I totally agree. Others are doing much, much more, but it feels good to do something to help the country that provided a good life for my immigrant family. I hope it will continue to do the same for others.
Ruth, you are amazing. I love your newsletter. You cover everything from "soup to nuts". I love when you write about food and your travels but I am so grateful you have also chosen to use this platform to speak out for social justice and the importance of voting in the upcoming election. While I don't usually leave comments, since you left your "comfort zone", I chose to leave mine, too. Thanks for all you do to connect your readers on so many enjoyable as well as sometimes difficult but important topics.
Thanks so much, Barbara! Your comment means a lot to me, especially knowing that you left your own comfort zone to write it. There is so much at stake in this election that it seems imperative to speak out, even if it is uncomfortable--or maybe because it is. Of course I do hope to get back to my "soup to nuts" topics of food and travel soon. I like to think such writing may perhaps help to comfort people in uncomfortable times--and that's important too.
Thanks again for your kind words. Friends like you mean the world.
Go Ruth!! I feel that respectful engagement between everyday Americans is more important than ever and I love to hear that you were able to have good discussions and convince people to know their facts before casting their ballot. β€οΈ
Thanks, Sam! Itβs what we all should be aiming forβrespectful discussions with those we disagree with. You canβt change minds, find a way to meet in the middle, agree to disagree or empathize with someone from a different background if you demonize each other. Thatβs true not only here but everywhere, as you have so eloquently pointed out in your posts and notes. Thanks again for your comment.
Gosh, how could someone be offended by you having your own opinion (especially when it's clearly the RIGHT opinion and, in fact, the only one that's possible for anyone who supports American democracy. I'm reading Heather Cox Richardson's book Democracy Awakening and the most interesting bit is how similar today is to a number of times in our history. If our lifespans were more like 200 years we wouldn't have forgotten such facts. But it's amazing how close we came to fascism already. Go Blue!
love love love this!!!
Thanks, Colleen! β€οΈ

Thanks, Crowden! I love Heather Cox Richardson, but I havenβt read her book. But I think everyone should subscribe to her brilliant column here on Substack: https://open.substack.com/pub/heathercoxrichardson/p/october-20-2024?r=159j4&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web.
