Happily, they forgive us as poor barbarians. And after reading everything about how to act in a ryoken I forgot to remove my shoes, can you believe it?! I hope you get to enjoy at least one nice omakase meal before you come home.
near Asuke, where Max had a home stay as part of jr. high student exchange trip in 2001, vicinity of Nagoya. Someday maybe I’ll get to go to Japan!! He came home talking about Western style bakery treats !
Just realized I didn’t read to your entire comment re Max and his home stay in Nagoya. The Western-style bakeries are mind-boggling in the array of treats they offer. You’d swear you were in Europe! I do hope you get a chance to visit, Susan! I just need to get serious about learning Japanese!
Enjoy Japan. I loved it there. And make sure you don’t do what I did and buy some food from the outdoor market and then try to eat it while walking around. You’ll quickly realize that you are showing yourself to be a ill-bred gaijin when you notice that nobody else is doing that. How gauche! I had to duck into a doorway to quickly eat what I had purchased, and then shuffle embarrassedly back to my ryokan!
Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately I’ve already made that faux pas. Just yesterday, there I was hungrily chompIng on a piece of salmon sushi 🍣 from 7-Eleven (quite different than the U.S. chain!) while waiting for the train in Osaka. Folks just averted their eyes at my gaijin ways! (They’re so polite here!) Thanks again for reading. I really enjoy your posts!

That’s funny about the shoes! We haven’t yet been to a ryokan. An omakase meal sounds nice. Maybe tonight!
So happy to see that you finally got there! And for the cherry blossoms besides!
