The quote from Steve Hayden is really something and thanks for the link to the Times piece, Ruth!
I have 4 brothers and grew up with sports being on the television and talked about ALL THE TIME — I still remember watching Joe Namath in Super Bowl III ! 😂 I watched with my nephew today who is here on a sports broadcasting internship — the tradition continues! (we ordered in Buffalo Wings)
We really miss our Super Bowl Sundays spent with diehard Pittsburgh Steeler fans, but I agree with you that the snacks and the commercials probably edged out the game (except in 2006 & 2009 when the Steelers won the game). Now we’re in London, there’s usually a midnight start to the proceedings 🙃
Even in Australia, we don't seem to be immune from the Super Bowl, although from what I can see it seems to revolve around the halftime ads, what people eat and Taylor Swift! I think the game is secondary, simply because most people here don't have a clue about how its played - or maybe that's just me!
Tennis is the only sport I watch. Thankfully, I am not married to a football guy, though we will probably watch the first half of tonight's game before turning to a movie (trying to get through all the Oscar best movie contenders). Cheers, Ruth, and enjoy the movie!
Not being into the Superbowl? Two weeks ago I had no idea who were even vying to be in it. I think the Kansas City Chiefs is one of the teams? My brother mentioned the name but I won't swear I'm remembering correctly. But the bottom line is I truly don't see the point. But that's fine, I'm sure most Americans don't see the point of F1 racing so it's all good. And as far as eating a traditional Superbowl Sunday meal - my wife is putting the finishing touches on a delicious Dal even as I type. :-)
Thanks for the trip down memory lane regarding the Super Bowl ads! It's amazing the Apple ad doesn't feel that long ago, but the world is so very different. I am not a football fan, but my husband watches the game and our tradition is making pizza.
Last week’s journalism issue and now more on the glory days of advertising--we lived parallel lives!
