What a great story! I was fascinated to learn about the history and background to the tradition of fasting. That strawberry blintz looks delicious too - I will have to try it!
Thanks, Jolene! It's a classic sour cream coffee cake--there's a similar recipe in The Joy of Cooking. But this was my mother's recipe. I would have printed the original from her notebook, but it was pretty illegible. I think there are many possible variations--including adding fresh or dried fruit or chocolate chips! Your wonderful posts about TJOC have inspired me to go back to those great old recipes more often!
I'm honored, Jolene! I'd love it! And I'd like to feature one of yours on my site as well. I'm not quite sure which recipe to choose--you have SO many great ones. I'm also not quite sure what the process involves (perhaps talking to each other elsewhere if we have other questions?), but it sounds like fun!
HI Renee! Thanks for your comment. I'm sorry it wasn't clearer and thanks for pointing out my error. It's baking soda--not water or Coke! I'm going to change it in the online version for future readers! Happy Baking! Please let me know how it comes out.
What a success! I left out the nuts because my family hates nuts and didn't have ginger but the cake still came out amazing. The top was crunchy and the inside super moist. Got tons of compliments at break-fast. Thank you!
So very glad, Renee! Thanks so much for letting me know! The cake is infinitely versatile. My mother's original recipe called for only cinnamon. I just switched out cardamom and ginger for part of it. And leaving out the nuts is always an option. Many people are allergic anyway. Happy Baking!
Beautiful post! I want to make the coffee cake but have a really dumb question... what do you mean by 1 teaspoon of "soda"? Baking soda? Soda water? Coca-Cola? I'm not a baker so in my mind it could be anything :)
Thank you Ruth for sharing so much information about the history and traditions of your religion!
You're welcome, Vicki! Glad it's of interest.

Thanks so much, Jean!
What a wonderful read, Ruth! I’m making the coffee cake, for sure!

So glad! I’d love to feature your recipe in November in TTK if you’d be interested!

Sounds great, Jolene! I look forward to hearing from you.
