I’ve enjoyed 2 trips to Savary Island with the most amazing mentor ever who ironically happens to be Hayden’s grandfather, Dixon! Randomly stumbling upon this article (it was the photo of Hayden that actually caught my eye) I am taken back to this special place that I will cherish always. Savary Island and the Mystical Magical Tour as we called a walk we got “lost” on along with so many other amazing memories are some of my most cherished!
If given the chance to visit again I would absolutely jump at the chance!!! Best little secret island ever!!!
What a special place and spectacular vacation. I've bicycled on the islands to the south Gabriola and others outside Nanaimo. How cool that you ventured further north. How did you ever find this tiny place?
Thanks for reading, Patricia! As I recall, we just stumbled on it while exploring the Sunshine Coast. We took a day trip there on one of our trips, then went back a second time, then now a third time. As I said, there's a bit of magic there that keeps summoning us to return. I hope you and Chris get a chance to visit one day.,
Ruth, what a joyful read, and such a place~ I haven't been to the Sunshine Coast in years, and never to Savary! Might need to find a place to play some tunes!! (as much as I missed seeing you in Seattle, I'm glad you got to stay here longer!) xox
Thanks for reading and commenting, Jean. I’m sorry we missed you on this visit. When we go back (and I know we will!), we’ll have to plan better. I bet there’s an untapped audience for you tunes on the Sunshine Coast too!
It was wonderful having you and Jeff stay in our cabin. I must say you were I favorite guest this year. I can't wait for Jeff's vlog on Savary Island, the Sunshine Coast vlog was amazing. If you come back to Savary I am going to cook you one of my favorites meals. Oh! Really we'll make it a party with some of the Savary people. And maybe we can even get Larry to perform for us.
Joan, we loved every minute on Savary and hope to come back again ASAP. I'm so glad you liked Jeff's Sunshine Coast piece; I will add a link to his Savary Island video when it comes out next week. It would be great to sample one of your favorite meals when we return--and a serenade from Larry would be amazing! He's so talented! Thanks again for being the best hosts ever!
Thank you for sharing this lovely tribute to the Sunshine Coast and especially Savary Island. I spent 10 fantastic, magical days in August on Savary Island in the same cabin, hosted by Joan and Larry.
Biking, hiking and exploring was wonderful. Thank you again.
Thanks so much for your kind words, Mary! So very happy you enjoyed the piece. We only stayed three days and only wished we had booked more days! It was definitely NOT enough. Next year--or whenever we can come back--we will definitely be staying longer.
Thank you so much for sharing your holiday to Savary Island, I was so enraptured by it all. The myth of the two headed snake, the young taxi driver, the farmers market and the lady baking those homemade treats... you really made this place come alive on paper, Ruth, thank you!
Thank you, Sinù! I’m so glad the experience came across! I don’t consider myself a travel writer, but it’s interesting to try to share some of what attracts you about a place you enjoy.
What a wonderful post, Ruth! I felt like I was traveling along with you and Jeff, a beautiful adventure and I loved all of the descriptions of the food you had and the brisket looks WOW! I’m going to continue on with Jeff’s post. Thanks for this, I feel like I went on vacation! ❤️
Savary Island sounds delightful, Ruth. Not seeing any Amazon trucks would be enough to make me happy. We have been swimming laps at our local lake for the last 20 years or so. The beach area is relatively small and now becomes so crowded on the weekend that I won't go near it. I blame Instagram.
I think you're right, Vicki! We used to visit Zion National Park in southern Utah and find few people on the trails. Now you actually have to make reservations for a shuttle to take you there during popular months. Every year the number of visitors seems to grow exponentially. Can't imagine the future there. Not sure if there is a solution to the Instagram problem. (Now I sound like a Luddite!)
I'm thinking all the things like "never heard of it" and "when do I leave?" How wonderful this sounds, and thank you for sharing it! ❤️ That said, I do share your concerns about over tourism , especially in "Instagrammable" spots. I wish more folks would get off the beaten path and travel as you do, talking with locals and learning about the culture of the place.
Thanks, Annette. I think you often get "off the beaten path"--along with sharing insights into history and culture of what you see. I did visit one small museum in the town of Gibsons and thought of you as I was looking at logging equipment and a "settler kitchen" from the 1890's. It is always fun to learn sometime new and imagine places as they once were.

And Jeff will play another song with Larry!

Actually you're a great travel writer. Each person writes from their own perspective. It's always fun to read your blogs.
You did it beautifully ❤️ xx
So cool to read about! I never knew a lot this area! Thanks :)
Thanks for reading, Susan. I think you and Mark would really enjoy it there!

Thanks so much, Jolene! Glad to have you along! ❤️ The brisket really was amazing. Never realized the big difference making it in a smoker could make.

Thanks, Ellen. it was fun!
Sounds like a lovely get away for ya’s!! ❤️ Thx for taking us with ya this way!
Thanks for taking the ride with me, Mindy!
