Hi Lorienne! Thanks for leaving a comment! Happy Passover! I'm cooking an interesting Italian side dish--a vegetarian mina with spinach--for my cousin's seder tomorrow night, the same evening as yours. I'd love to talk Jewish food with you sometime. Wishing you and yours a delicious seder!
Thanks, Marg! Since they're really a blackberry-raspberry hybrid, you could easily substitute either berry and have a good approximation, I think. Since it's summer where you are, I imagine there are some special berries we don't grow here that would make an awesome pie!
Will be making it, Judy! Brought back some filling. I doubt I can find any extra olallieberries to add, but maybe a few blackberries and raspberries will do. Probably an all-butter crust. No lard.
You gotta go try it, Ellen! I hope to go back and try a few more of the fruit pies next time. And the chicken pot pie was out of this world too! Jeff and I split a small one and were fighting over the crumbs!
David and I often stopped in Cambria on our way to visit our daughter in San Francisco years ago. It’s where I first heard of and fell in love with not only Cambria, but also olallieberry pie. We always visited Linn’s and I even bought some flatware in the shop there, which I am still using. (Villeroy & Boch) I LOVE the place! Also bought a wedding gift for a niece in one of the galleries there. So glad you discovered it; it’s a real find!
Love the idea of a 'boutique berry.' Definitely intrigued by the ollalieberry -- never heard of it before! And isn't it funny that central California can house two different places by the name of Tin City? It's also a wine-tasting enclave in Paso Robles. Anyway, loved reading this and am yearning for some pie!
I didn't know about Tin City in Paso Robles! Will have to check it out. The olallieberry worth all the attention, though I haven't yet tasted it fresh. Clearly I will have to pay another visit to Cambria during berry season!
Thanks for the comment, Annette! I don't think you have to be a foodie to love pies--and really it's just a lot of down-home sort of food. Even if you weren't a pie lover, you'd find something you'd want to eat! And they have a nice loo too!😉
I passed Cambria last summer and I DIDN'T KNOW! I'll know for next time, so I can do that thing where I say to husband "Let's stop in Cambria to use the loo....Oh, look! A pie shop!" and he rolls his eyes but parks anyway. He's lovely but not a foodie. Thanks for the tip, because this is clearly a find. ❤️
Let's talk Jewish Food! I'm making my Seder tomorrow night 4/22/22.

Those pies look very tasty - especially the apple pie with ice cream - yum!....Denis
Thanks, Denis! You should go sometime!
I really enjoyed your article but now I’m starving. I’m wondering what I can substitute for olallieberries. They sound delicious.

Yummy. Better make some pie for me soon!
Hmmmm, I will. What's your favorite?
So interesting. Looking forward to tasting your pie. No lard necessary.

Why do I get sooo hungry (even after just eating breakfast) after one of your posts? The pie sounds delicious!

I was in Cambria a few years ago to see the Hearst Castle but I've heard of this place. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Hoang! We didn't either until we heard about it a few weeks ago. Perhaps you can find olallieberries where you live come summer.
Awesome. I need an excuse to go, and you gave me one :)
I always love a destination where food is involved!😊

Love that pie!
My mouth is watering. I had never heard of the olalliberry.
Thanks, Vicki! I hope you'll get a chance to try it someday!
