Summer's last hurrah: sunny skies, sparkling waves, forest trails and apple cider

My husband Jeff says you can never have too many photos, so here are some more from our trip to Canada’s Sunshine Coast. Please also check out my accompanying story about Savary Island.

Canadian Getaway: Savary Island

In Gibsons, Katie sells crab, salmon and other seafood she and fellow fishermen (almost all of them men!) catch during long (100-day!) fishing trips on the Strait of Georgia. After falling into this life as a teen, she said she can’t imagine doing anything else.

A glass of apple cider—the alcoholic kind—at Sunday Cider in Gibsons. Cider is growing in popularity in British Columbia, where there is access to an abundance of fresh apples.

I had no idea that flavored fermented cider was a thing, nor that most were on the dry side, like a refreshing white wine. After sampling a few, I opted for a glass of the Stone Fruit Cider, flavored with peaches and apricots.

Woodwind Cottage, our Savary Island rental. It had everything we needed, including two bikes and personable hosts, Joan and Larry Vollans, who live on the island year round.

A delightful market with fresh meats and produce in Powell River, B.C., where we bought supplies for a barbecue on our return journey.

The deck at Inlets Restaurant at the West Coast Wilderness Lodge in Egmont offered the most glorious view. The food was pretty good too: fish and chips for me, grilled cheese for Jeff!
